Pulmonary Program

Gaylord’s Pulmonary Program is for individuals with chronic respiratory insufficiency. Patients are evaluated by board certified pulmonologists and respiratory care practitioners.

Our Pulmonary Program staff members are well known for their expertise in pulmonary care and services. Licensed respiratory care practitioners provide therapy and training for pulmonary patients with various respiratory conditions and diseases.

Helping Patients Breathe Better an article about the pulmonary program

The Pulmonary Program accepts patients with:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Chronic emphysema
  • Bronchitis
  • Asthma
  • Respiratory insufficiency from muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome or spinal cord injuries

The Pulmonary Program also addresses restrictive lung disease, obstructive sleep apnea and respiratory complications from morbid obesity through the hospital's bariatrics services.

Many ventilator-dependent patients may be weaned from the ventilator with the supervision, encouragement and support of our respiratory therapy staff. This enables a large percentage of pulmonary patients to return home after discharge.

Gaylord has an ongoing affiliation in pulmonary health care with the Yale University School of Medicine. Gaylord also has complete facilities for pulmonary function testing and exercise tolerance studies.

Many pulmonary patients continue their recovery after their inpatient stay with Gaylord’s Outpatient Pulmonary Program. This supervised outpatient program reinforces the education and exercise programs learned during an inpatient stay.

Pulmonary Program Services treatment may include:

  • Ventilator management and weaning
  • BiPAP/CPAP
  • Tracheostomy care
  • Oxygen management (including high flow modalities and pulse oximetry)
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation and education
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Passy-Muir valve
