Aquatic therapy - therapeutic exercise in water - provides a soothing, efficient method of exercise for achieving movement. The water, which is maintained at a temperature between 88 degrees F and 90 degrees F in Gaylord's therapeutic pool, provides a cushioning effect that protects the body from any pounding, jarring movements. The ability to swim is not necessary to participate in aquatic therapy. A doctor's prescription is required. Immersed in chest-high water, people bear only 20 percent of their body weight on their legs. The remaining 80 percent is supported by the buoyant environment of the water. Warmer temperatures relax muscles, making for a better workout.
Exercise in the water also provides more of a workout than exercise on land. One hour of land aerobic exercise is equal to 30 minutes of water aerobic exercise. |

The community pool at the Woodbridge campus is also accessible with a ramp and stairs, large locker rooms and an accessible changing area for people who need assistance from an accompanying aide or family member. Aquacize is a community pool exercise program for people of all ages with disabilities and for older adults. Members may use the pool Monday-Saturday during posted hours at the Wallingford campus.
