Guillain-Barré Syndrome Rehab - Shay's Story

Shay's patient story

The last thing on Shay’s mind was getting sick. He was athletic, the CEO of his family’s business, and the father of two energetic young daughters. Then out of the blue, his hands and feet started to tingle and go numb.

Over the next week his symptoms got progressively worse. By the time he was admitted to the hospital he couldn’t walk or use his arms. Shay was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition that affects the peripheral nervous system and can result in almost total paralysis.

After five days of treatment in the ICU, Shay was transferred to Gaylord Hospital to begin his rehabilitation. At that point Shay couldn’t walk or feed himself. Almost immediately, the staff at Gaylord began working with him, doing extensive physical and occupational therapy. “It was not a country club – it was work,” he stresses. “They didn’t let me alone for even an hour. You are at Gaylord to get better and I was very grateful to be there.”

After a month of therapy, Shay returned home and he continued therapy via Gaylord’s outpatient rehabilitation services. Shay has some permanent nerve damage, but he has been able to return to many of the activities he loves including managing his business and playing with his daughters. “I had some amazing therapists at Gaylord. It was wonderful, it was like a family,” he says.
