 Dance Medicine

Gaylord Physical Therapy offers dance specific rehabilitation for dancers of all ages, in a unique setting with access to dance studio space. Our Dance Medicine Program focuses on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and conditioning specifically designed for dancers. Dancers are educated about the treatment process for their injury, and receive an individualized program of care designed to rehabilitate as well as condition the body for prevention of future injuries.

Our staff of physical therapists, many with advanced certifications, as well as personal dance experience, will assist dancers in meeting their goals, and help them to restore muscle balance, joint function and proper body mechanics. Progression utilizing return to dance plyometric program will be emphasized throughout the course of treatment using functional treatment programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen during a dance-specific evaluation?

A physical therapist will perform a musculoskeletal testing assessment, which includes looking at strength, flexibility, balance, and postural stability.

Will I be dancing during my appointment?

Yes. Bring the shoes you normally wear and, unless an injury prevents you from demonstrating, the therapist will review your technique to assess your biomechanics and perform an analysis.

Do you offer preventative screenings?

Yes. Because we want all dancers to avoid injury whenever possible, we also partner with local studios to offer dance injury preventative injury screenings. If you own a studio, or teach at one, please reach out to schedule a time for our therapists to visit your studio. The aim of the screening is to maximize each dancer’s potential for wellness. The screening exam consists of a review of the dancer’s complaints including a gross musculoskeletal scan with general fitness testing. At the conclusion of the assessment, the dancer will be given an individualized injury prevention exercise regime with recommendations for technique modification, training strategies, and proper footwear.

Is there a charge for the preventative injury screenings?

No, we offer complimentary screenings as a community service.
