Locating Information about Sleep on the Internet

Today there is a vast collection of knowledge on the information super highway, commonly known as the World Wide Web. Driver beware, however, as anyone can build his own web site. You must be cautious as to the content, validity, and accuracy of the information that you obtain from the Internet. To help you navigate, the editors at Better Sleep Online are pleased to offer their assistance. Periodically, we will provide reviews of informative web sites.

A great starting place for learning more about sleep and sleeping disorders is the National Sleep Foundation at www.sleepfoundation.org. This site covers all aspects of sleep and even has a link called Shop for Sleep. Here you can shop online for anything from books to clothing to vitamins. Up to 20% of every purchase goes to help raise needed funds to support the National Sleep Foundation’s public education, research, and advocacy programs. From the home page, you can also link to the National Sleep Foundation bookstore, which has an extensive collection of books covering all aspects of sleep and sleep problems. Sleep Links—a hyperlink on the home page—is fantastic. Many support and advocacy groups are listed here, including the American Sleep Apnea Association.

The web site for the American Sleep Apnea Association (www.sleepapnea.org) provides a wealth of information. Make sure that you check out the publication, Sleep and the Internet, which is listed on the home page. The article explains how to assess the information that you obtain over the Internet. Chat rooms are also explained.

Did you know that America On Line (AOL) has live chat rooms where people affected by sleep apnea can converse with each other on Tuesday through Thursday evenings from 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.? You may be surprised to find that during their Thursday evening forum spouses and friends of people with sleep apnea can chat with each other. This publication shows you how to access the chat rooms.

Be aware, however, that these forums are not moderated by a medical professional and do not take the place of getting advice from an expert in the field.
