Medical Division

Gaylord’s Medically Complex program addresses the specific needs of patients with multiple serious health problems due to illness or injury who require a hospital level of care. Through this program, Gaylord provides care to those who may no longer require the intensive monitoring of an acute care hospital, but still need around-the-clock medical, nursing and respiratory staff coverage.

Patients within the Medically Complex program often experience medical issues such as:

  1. post-operative complications from abdominal, cardiac or vascular surgery
  2. extensive wound care issues resulting from serious wound complications, extensive surgery or pressure ulcers
  3. debility following chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery for the treatment of cancer

Services include care for patients with:

  1. multiple system failure, complex injuries or illnesses
  2. ventilator care and weaning
  3. pulmonary care
  4. complex wound care

Ventilator Program

Many ventilator dependent patients may be weaned from ventilator use with the supervision, encouragement and support of Gaylord's respiratory therapy staff. This enables a large percentage of pulmonary patients to return home after discharge. Patients are evaluated by board certified pulmonologists and respiratory care practitioners.

Pulmonary Program

Gaylord's licensed respiratory care practitioners provide therapy and training for pulmonary patients with various respiratory diseases. Widely known for the staff's expertise in pulmonary services, the Pulmonary program accepts patients with:

  1. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  2. chronic emphysema
  3. bronchitis
  4. asthma

The program also addresses restrictive lung disease, obstructive sleep apnea and respiratory complications from morbid obesity through the hospital’s bariatrics services. Gaylord's staff is expert in respiratory complications related to neurological disorders, such as muscular dystrophy and post-polio syndrome, as well as spinal cord injuries. Gaylord has an ongoing affiliation in pulmonary health care with the Yale University School of Medicine. Gaylord also has full facilities for pulmonary function testing and exercise tolerance studies.

Many pulmonary patients continue their recovery after discharge with Gaylord's outpatient pulmonary program. The outpatient program continues and reinforces the education and exercise programs learned during the patients' inpatient stay.
