Resources

The Emily Hall Tremaine Library & Resource Center collects and organizes a collection of books, journals, databases and audiovisuals to serve the information needs of patients, their families and caregivers, the staff, students, members of the community and other libraries. The collection includes resources in the fields of consumer health, medicine, nursing, allied health, and health administration. In addition, a small collection of fiction and biography is maintained for the recreational reader.

Services

Instruction on the use of library resources, databases, and the Internet is available; an appointment is recommended.

Literature searches will be performed by a professional medical librarian. Requests may be made in person, in writing, or by telephone, fax or e-mail. Most searches are done using the National Library of Medicine MEDLINE database. MEDLINE contains more than 9 million records dating back to 1966. You will receive a printout containing citations to journal articles.

Full text of most articles can be obtained from our collection or from our network of affiliated libraries. When requesting articles that must come from another library, you should anticipate that it will take 5 or 6 working days to arrive. Fax service is only available in the case of a clinical emergency.

The Internet contains a vast number of heath-related resources, but not all of these are reliable or easy to use. The list below is intended to serve as a starting point for users who are unfamiliar with websites intended for both the consumer and the health professional.
