At 16 years old, Nathan Dong has learned that life can change in an instant.
Dong, a junior honors student at Southington High School, was in his parents’ bedroom on Nov. 23, 2021, playing a video game when a terrible headache came on and suddenly he couldn’t feel anything on his right side. “I thought I was dying,” Dong said.

Body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation are the most commonly known vital signs that can provide a good snapshot of a person’s overall health and status. Monitoring these indicators over time can identify subtle changes and irregularities that may be indicative of a more serious problem and may help inform future treatment plans.

The first residents of the four-year program began their transitional internship year in internal medicine this past July at UConn Health and Hartford Hospital. The PM&R rotations will begin at Hartford Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation and Gaylord Hospital in July 2023.

It’s seen a lot in that time. At the turn of the century tuberculosis was a leading cause of death — with the disease claiming one life a day in New Haven.
Local doctors knew they needed a plan. They decided that a sanatorium wasn’t the solution, and so they gathered a diverse set of professions to create the New Haven County Anti-Tuberculosis Association.

WALLINGFORD — Gaylord Specialty Healthcare officials and Cuno Foundation leaders on Wednesday celebrated the contributions of Kenneth W. Mango, a longtime member of the foundation’s distribution committee, with the renaming of a patient room in Mango’s honor.
Mango, a Meriden attorney and partner of the Luby Olson PC law firm, served on the distribution committee for more than 35 years.

Griswold ― Jillian Harpin enjoyed water skiing Saturday morning in loops around Pachaug Pond.
Harpin, a Wethersfield resident who had a spinal cord injury about six years ago, used an adaptive water ski, which was about the size of a wake board and had a seat.
She said that since her injury, she’s become way more adventurous and experienced so many different types of sports that she never tried before. She said participating in adaptive sports allows her to keep challenging herself and meet other people who share a similar journey.

"There were days where I thought I was going to be in that bed the rest of my life," said Lenny Lamarre.
The 55-year-old from Chicopee, Massachusetts, got COVID on May 26. Little did he know, he would have another uphill battle two weeks later.
"My legs started getting very weak. By that Thursday, I couldn't walk. My legs were totally paralyzed, and by Friday the paralysis started moving up my body," said Lamarre.

Gaylord Specialty Healthcare recently celebrated the completion of a $1.3 million expansion of its North Haven outpatient clinic. The expansion more than doubled Gaylord Therapy Services clinic, located at 8 Devine St. in North Haven, and added neurological therapy services there.
These services aim to help patients recover from physical, cognitive and language challenges due to stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord and brain injury, and other neurological conditions.
