ReWalk Exoskeleton

What is the ReWalk 6.0 Exoskeleton?

The ReWalk 6.0 Personal System is a wearable, battery-powered exoskeleton that provides powered hip and knee motion to enable individuals with lower-limb disabilities, such as paraplegia, to stand upright and to walk. ReWalk is the first FDA cleared exoskeleton for rehabilitation and personal use in the United States. Designed for everyday use by individuals at home and in their communities, the ReWalk is custom-fit to each user. If you meet the medical criteria for use, the ReWalk can be tested during one of Gaylord's ReWalk Clinic Days with our trained physical therapists.

For inpatients, our Ekso Robotic Exoskeleton is being used with many of our spinal cord and stroke patients. But Ekso is not approved for in-home use at this time. By offering the Ekso and/or the ReWalk to eligible individuals, our goal is to offer the best options that meet specific needs throughout recovery.

To see if you are a candidate to trial the ReWalk fill out this form and a ReWalk Clinical Specialist will be in touch. Or contact Gaylord Outpatient Appointments at (203) 284-2888. See the the Contact Info at the bottom of the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process is summarized in five steps: STEP 1 - PRE-SCREENING: Pre-screening consists of a simple questionnaire that ensures you meet the criteria to use ReWalk. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes and is conducted by a ReWalk Specialist. STEP 2 - EVALUATION: In preparation to trial the ReWalk you need to obtain a prescription for the evaluation from your physician. The evaluation is a physical exam to ensure you meet the requirements to use the ReWalk. During the evaluation you will also be measured to be fitted into the ReWalk. STEP 3 - TRIALING: During the trial, which is held on a ReWalk Clinic Day at Gaylord, you will be able to stand and take steps in the ReWalk. At this time, the ReWalk Reimbursement Team will help you in seeking coverage for your ReWalk Personal System, supporting you throughout the process. STEP 4 - TRAINING: Training in the ReWalk is a skills based program to prepare you for ReWalk use in your daily life. The duration of training varies with each individual and takes place at Gaylord, which is a certified ReWalk Advanced Training Clinic. The cost of training is generally covered by insurance. STEP 5 - OWNERSHIP: After completing the training you can take your personal ReWalk system home. A prescription will be required for personal ownership.

ReWalk is a wearable, powered exoskeleton that provides powered hip and knee motion to enable individuals with lower-limb disabilities, such as paraplegia, to stand upright and to walk. ReWalk is the first FDA cleared exoskeleton for rehabilitation and personal use in the United States. The system facilitates standing, controlled, independent walking and turning, and is intended for use indoors and outdoors. The user initiates mobility with a small tilt of their upper body, which activates the ReWalk’s computer-based control system and motion sensors. The system and training program are designed to allow the user to reach walking speeds of .4 m/s or higher, and one study participant reached 0.71 meters/second, faster than any other exoskeleton in the market. The ReWalk 6.0, which is the latest version of the ReWalk Personal system, boasts a sleek redesign of previous iterations. It is more easily fitted to the user’s measurements, and is custom ordered for each individual to provide the most precise fit of any device on the market. The weight of the device is barely felt by the user, as it rests wholly on footplates inside the user’s shoe.

The ReWalk is for individuals with lower-limb disabilities such as paraplegia. The system accommodates individuals from 5’3” to 6’3” tall, weighing up to 220 lbs. A comprehensive evaluation will be conducted to ultimately determine if a person is a candidate to use the device.

Yes, the ReWalk Rehabilitation system and Personal systems are the first exoskeleton technologies cleared by the FDA, an important distinction for use in the United States.

The ReWalk Rehabilitation system is used in top rehabilitation centers and clinics as well as VA hospitals across the nation, in addition to rehabilitation centers around the world. As of Q1 2017, more than 300 systems have been sold worldwide, with over 100 of these for personal use. Ninety of these personal systems have been provided by third party payers, and ReWalk’s reimbursement team provides assistance to qualified candidates seeking their own devices. The ReWalk Personal system is being used in the U.S., Europe, Israel and other countries by people using it in their everyday lives in community ambulation.

ReWalk Robotics is a long-time partner with the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA). In December 2015, the VA announced a national policy for the evaluation, training, and procurement of ReWalk Personal exoskeleton systems for all qualifying veterans across the United States. ReWalk Robotics is the first and only exoskeleton manufacturer included under a national coverage policy in the United States for qualifying individuals. Veterans with spinal cord injuries are strongly encouraged to visit Gaylord or their local VA hospital to undergo initial assessment for qualification to use the system. Those who qualify can then participate in a roughly 90 day-long training process before receiving the system.

The ReWalk Personal System is available to consumers upon meeting the physiological requirements as determined by medical examination and successful completion of the required training program. The first step is to speak with a ReWalk Clinical Specialist (774-463-6044) or a Gaylord ReWalk physical therapist (203-284-2888) for a no-cost screening.

A ReWalk Clinic Day is arranged when there are two or more individuals have been successfully prescreened to try the ReWalk at Gaylord. The ReWalk team joins Gaylord's ReWalk trained physical therapists in fitting you and training you how to stand and walk with ReWalk. The ReWalk unit will be customized to precisely fit you. You will then transfer into the device, with help from the therapist if needed. You will be instructed on how to stand up and perform balance exercises with use of crutches. The therapist may initiate walking after the balance exercises. The length of time for your initial trial visit varies but expect anywhere from 2-3 hours. The average time spent in the device is 1 to 2 hours per session. You may need to participate in multiple trial sessions depending on your progress.
