Speech Therapy Expertise

Speech-language pathologists at Gaylord specialize in treating speech, language, and cognitive deficits associated with neurological disorders. Speech therapists help with recovery of speech, verbal expression, and comprehension. They support the recovery of reading and writing as well as other cognitive and communication skills. Swallowing impairment (dysphagia) and stuttering are also key conditions treated by Gaylord speech experts.

Our speech therapy, like every form of rehabilitative care we provide, is focused on goals. In the area of speech, this may include returning a patient to eating the least restrictive diet, using a speaking valve if a tracheostomy is in place, or remembering newly learned information. Treatment is provided in individual speech therapy sessions and group therapy if appropriate. Families members are encouraged to participate in treatment sessions.

Inpatient Speech Therapy

Speech therapy for inpatients depends on the patient's condition and needs and may include treatment for dysphagia, cognitive issues or deficits, speech, voice, and communication disorders such as aphasia. Once it is determined that a patient will benefit from speech therapy it becomes part of the therapy program.

Outpatient Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is offered on an outpatient basis at our Wallingford and North Haven locations. Patients can continue speech therapy after an inpatient stay. Members of the community may also be referred to us for speech therapy, where we offer treatments for dysphagia, aphasia, cognitive deficits or issues, voice, speech, and other communication disorders.
