If you have multiple sclerosis (MS) and are feeling worn out, join the club: About 80% of people living with MS have fatigue, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS).
While some of that tiredness may come from being inactive, lack of sleep, working harder to compensate for balance issues or weakness, or medications, it’s also due to the disease process itself, says Kim Fredsall, a multiple sclerosis physical therapy specialist at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare in Wallingford, CT. “One of the theories is that the signaling from the nerves to the muscles is impaired—kind of like having a frayed phone charging cord—so the body and muscles are working harder. But inflammation can also lead to fatigue; inflammatory cytokines will slow signaling.”
