When life presents challenges, we help you overcome them.
Our Spinal Cord Injury Program is dedicated to a single goal – guiding you to the most independent, productive life possible. We offer comprehensive, integrated rehabilitation that is designed to maximize each patient’s abilities. Our program draws on the expertise of a complete team of specialists, as well as the latest technologies and research. Gaylord is a member of the New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center (NERSCIC), one of just 14 programs nationwide to be designated as a Spinal Cord Injury Model System by the U.S. National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
We also understand that each patient has unique needs, talents and abilities, so our therapies focus on the “complete patient” – body, mind and spirit. With an expert team, innovative technologies and a patient-centered approach to care, you can be assured that if a spinal cord injury presents you or a loved one with special challenges, we can provide the skills to overcome them.
A dedicated team of specialists
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) treatment at Gaylord involves an integrated team approach. Depending on your needs, treatment will draw on the expertise of specialists from a wide range of disciplines: physicians, physiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, nutritionists, pulmonary/respiratory specialists, as well as physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapists. Using a coordinated approach, our team can provide you with a program that’s tailored to your unique needs. Above all, we will help you set realistic goals and give you the skills to attain them.
Gaylord's Spinal Cord Program
Dr. David Rosenblum, medical director of rehabilitation, describes our spinal cord injury (SCI) program.
You are still you
We understand that inside each patient, there’s still a person – with desires, goals and emotions. We recognize that, despite your injury, you’re the same person you’ve always been. So, we work with you to help you develop new pathways to realizing your goals and meeting your emotional and social needs. With a holistic approach to care, plus extensive inpatient and outpatient support services for you and your family, we can help you develop the skills you need to make the most of work, home and life. Your injury and experiences are unique but we know that the stories of other SCI patients (see links below) can help you gain perspective and hope.
Jonathan's story
Jonathan was studying in India when he fell from a 70 foot cliff suffering a complete C5-C6 spinal cord injury. He spent two and a half months doing his rehabilitation at Gaylord.
Mike's story
Mike was hit by a car while riding his bike as part of his training for a triathlon. He was one of our first patients to try our new Ekso bionic exoskleteton.
Support for the whole family
A spinal cord injury affects the patient’s whole family. Our team is equipped to provide support to everyone involved. Families are encouraged to participate in therapy and support groups, along with the patient. In addition, we offer a caregiver’s support group, hands-on education for care at home, and access to the LIFE Center, RIC’s interactive library. We also will help connect you to resources in your own community for ongoing care, support and services.
