Psychiatric Care for the Whole Person

A stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, or serious medical illness can change more than the body. It can affect mood, memory, sleep, behavior, relationships, identity, and a person's sense of the future.
Psychiatry is part of Gaylord's Center for Neurobehavioral Health, addressing these challenges as part of the rehabilitation process - working alongside physicians, therapists, nurses, psychologists, neuropsychologists, spiritual care, and other members of the care team to understand each patient's needs within the context of their health, recovery, independence, and goals.
For some patients, these challenges may become more apparent after returning home. When appropriate, Gaylord's outpatient psychiatry services can provide continuity of care following inpatient rehabilitation, helping patients navigate the emotional and psychological changes that may continue throughout recovery.

We specialize in psychiatric concerns associated with neurological injury, medical illness, and rehabilitation, including:
- Mood, behavioral, or personality changes following brain injury or neurological illness
- Depression and anxiety during illness or recovery
- Emotional adjustment to disability, loss, and changes in independence
- Sleep disturbance
- Cognitive and behavioral symptoms requiring psychiatric evaluation
- Medication-related psychiatric concerns in medically complex patients
- Bipolar disorder, psychosis, and other psychiatric conditions occurring alongside medical or neurological illness or injury
Additional diagnoses and treatment areas may be available based on individual patient needs.
Continuity Beyond Rehabilitation
The challenges of recovery do not necessarily end when a patient leaves the hospital.
For some patients, psychiatric symptoms may emerge or become more apparent after returning home, as they adjust to changes in their health, independence, relationships, and daily life.
When appropriate, Gaylord's outpatient psychiatry services can provide continuity of care for eligible patients following inpatient rehabilitation.

Can psychiatry help with emotional or behavioral changes after a stroke or brain injury?
Yes. Neurological injury can affect mood, behavior, sleep, relationships, and emotional well-being. Gaylord's Psychiatry team evaluates these changes within the context of each patient's neurological condition, medical history, and rehabilitation goals, and can provide treatment and ongoing support when appropriate.
What does a psychiatrist do as part of rehabilitation?
A psychiatrist evaluates and treats mental health and behavioral concerns that may arise alongside neurological injury, serious illness, or disability. At Gaylord, Psychiatry works closely with the broader rehabilitation team to understand how these concerns may affect a patient's recovery, relationships, independence, and quality of life.
What psychiatric conditions does Gaylord treat?
Gaylord Psychiatry evaluates and treats a range of psychiatric concerns that can occur alongside neurological injury, serious illness, and rehabilitation. These may include depression, anxiety, mood and behavioral changes, sleep disturbance, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and emotional adjustment to disability or changes in independence.
How does Gaylord Psychiatry work with the rest of my care team?
Psychiatry is integrated into Gaylord's multidisciplinary rehabilitation model. Our psychiatrists collaborate with rehabilitation physicians, therapists, nurses, psychologists, neuropsychologists, social workers, Spiritual Care, and other members of the clinical team to coordinate care and develop an approach that reflects each patient's individual needs.
Can I schedule an appointment with Gaylord Psychiatry if I am not a Gaylord patient?
