    PM&R Residency at Gaylord

    As part of the new PM&R residency program offered through the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Gaylord Hospital is a key participating clinical site providing clinical rotations for residents in their second, third and fourth year of residence. The four year program will accommodate four residents per year, for a total of 16 residents, with the first residents starting at UConn Health and Hartford Hospital in 2022, and rotations at Gaylord beginning in 2023.

    At a press conference held on April 1, 2022, to announce that Gaylord had received a $1.2 million dollar grant for the construction of facilities that will be used as part of our newly created physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program, Gaylord's President and CEO Sonja LaBarbera, Chief Medical Director Stephen Holland, MD, and Medical Director, Inpatient Rehabilitation Alyse Sicklick, MD, all spoke about the importance of Connecticut's only PM&R residency to the community and nation. Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal also talked about the critical importance of Gaylord's role in the state, country, and world. And about the health system's pivotal role in the care of patients and in training the next generation of physiatrists.

    About Gaylord

    Gaylord Specialty Healthcare is a nonprofit health system located in Wallingford, Connecticut, which offers rehabilitation for people at every point in their journey from illness or injury to maximum recovery.

    The system is anchored by Gaylord Hospital, a 137-bed long-term acute care hospital (LTCH) that provides inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation for a wide range of medical conditions and injuries. Gaylord Hospital is one of only a few hospitals in the United States that is CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) certified for comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation and subspecialty certified in spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, and outpatient.

    The Milne Institute for Healthcare Innovation, located at Gaylord Hospital, is a hub for accelerating world-class rehabilitative research, technology development, and innovation. Gaylord is also part of the Spaulding New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury System.

    The health system also includes Traurig House, which offers a transitional living program for individuals with a brain injury or stroke, Gaylord Outpatient Services, and Gaylord Physical Therapy for patients who require diagnosis and treatment on an outpatient basis.

    Residency Details

    Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency

    As part of the new PM&R residency program offered through the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Gaylord Hospital is a key participating clinical site providing clinical rotations for residents in their second, third and fourth year of residence. The four year program will accommodate four residents per year, for a total of 16 residents, with the first residents starting at UConn Health and Hartford Hospital in 2022, and rotations at Gaylord beginning in 2023.

    Our physiatrists are board certified in PM&R, with full-time staff also board certified in spinal cord injury medicine, brain injury medicine, and electrodiagnostic medicine.

    The PM&R residents’ educational experience is facilitated by our research institute, CME certification, a well-known prosthetics and orthotics service, a wheelchair assessment service, a large recreational therapy department, and the latest technology, including exoskeleton robotic systems, unweighted gait systems, FES and some of the most advanced rehab equipment and technology available.

    David Rosenblum, MD, is Gaylord’s PM&R residency site director. Dr. Rosenblum is the medical director of the Milne Institute for Healthcare Innovation, director of medical education, and director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program. He is also board certified in spinal cord injury medicine and brain injury medicine.

    Other clinical sites include Hartford Hospital, UConn Health, Connecticut Children's, Hospital for Special Care and the Veterans Administration.

    Created in partnership with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Hartford Hospital, Gaylord Hospital, and UConn Health, the PM&R residency program is committed to training the next generation of physiatrists to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to individuals with physical disabilities and impairments.

    Physiatry is truly one of the most fulfilling disciplines in medicine. It is a chance to make a significant difference in the lives of people who have experienced life-altering illnesses or injuries.

    During medical school, Dr. David Rosenblum was drawn to physiatry after witnessing the functional difference one could make in the lives of those recovering from life-altering illnesses or injuries.
     
    Dr. Rosenblum joined Gaylord Specialty Healthcare in 1992, treating patients with spinal cord injuries, as well as many other conditions and is committed to seeking out new ways to improve the present – and future – quality of life for his patients. Along with his interdisciplinary team of rehabilitative experts, he has helped to propel Gaylord Specialty Healthcare to the national forefront of clinical care, rehabilitation and research.

    Throughout his three decades at Gaylord, he has been an active researcher, lecturer and teacher with work published in numerous medical journals and textbooks.

    Under his direction, Gaylord’s spinal cord program was included in the highly competitive Model Spinal Cord Injury System for three, five-year grant cycles. Dr. Rosenblum also led Gaylord to be among the first in the nation to use the intrathecal baclofen pump for the treatment of severe spasticity and to be a pioneer in the usage of exoskeletal robotic technology to allow people with spinal cord injuries or lower extremity paralysis or weakness to stand and walk.

    In 2020, Dr. Rosenblum became the medical director for Gaylord’s Milne Institute for Healthcare Innovation, a hub for accelerating world-class rehabilitative research, technology development and innovation to improve the quality of life and function of people around the world.

    Outside of work, he enjoys playing flute as an active member of the New Haven Chamber Orchestra.
