WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT, May 20, 2026 — Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, a nonprofit rehabilitation-focused healthcare organization headquartered in Wallingford, has received a $40,000 grant from the John & Margaret Sinclaire Foundation to support planning efforts for the future renovation and expansion of the main inpatient rehabilitation Gym into a new Center for Functional Recovery at Gaylord Hospital.

The funding will support critical early-stage planning activities including architectural renderings, engineering assessments, floor plans, and other design work tied to the project.

The Gym serves as a cornerstone of recovery for patients requiring intensive rehabilitation therapies. Approximately 90% of Gaylord patients spend an average of 2.5 hours each day in the Gym participating in physical, occupational, and other therapeutic interventions designed to help them regain independence and maximize function.

Built in the 1970s, the 10,674-square-foot Gym currently operates at full capacity. As rehabilitative therapies, technology, and clinical practices continue to evolve, Gaylord has identified the need to enlarge, modernize, and reconfigure the space to better meet patient needs, and increase and improve safety, efficiency, and outcomes.

The proposed expansion would add approximately 8,704 square feet to the existing facility and is part of Gaylord’s broader campus master plan to address aging infrastructure and enhance patient care environments.

“Support from the John & Margaret Sinclaire Foundation is helping us take an important step toward reimagining and transforming one of the most vital spaces on our campus,” said Roslyn Gilhuly, Executive Director, The Gaylord Foundation, Inc. and Associate Vice President, Development, Gaylord Hospital, Inc.

“The Gym is essential to our patients’ rehabilitation every day. This funding enables us to advance plans to transform the space into a new Center for Functional Recovery - a modern, accessible facility designed for emerging rehabilitation technologies, expanded access to advanced therapy, and improved outcomes for every patient who walks through our doors.”
